The ritual

Hot, cold, and the quiet bit in between.

A wood fire takes an hour to bring the barrel up. By the time you arrive the stones are ticking and the river is doing what it always does. You climb in, you get warm to the bone, and then you go into the Barrow.

People come for the circulation, the recovery after a run or a long week, the way the cold flattens out stress and leaves the head unusually clear. Mostly, though, they come back for the company on the quay afterwards — six strangers in dry robes at half seven in the morning, laughing at the state of the weather.

Sauna and cold water aren't medical treatment. If you've a health condition, have a word with your GP first.

  1. Heat

Cedar, woodsmoke and stones at 85°C. Water on the rocks for löyly — the soft steam the Finns build their whole tradition around.

  2. Plunge

Ten steps down the stone quay and into the Barrow. Shoulders under, long breath out. Whatever you were carrying is gone.

  3. Rest

Wrapped up on the old quay wall while the blood comes back and the mist moves off the water. Nothing to do here but stand.

  4. Repeat

Two or three rounds, unhurried, then tea. You'll leave lighter than you arrived — everyone does.

How it works

Never done this before? Perfect.

Most people at their first session have never sat in a sauna, let alone got into a river in February. Here's exactly how the hour goes.

  1. 01

    Arrive five minutes early

Park on the quay and look for the smoke. We start on the hour, and a late arrival eats into your own heat.

  2. 02

    Say hello, drop your bag

There's a changing shelter and hooks beside the barrel. Change into swimwear, leave the phone in the bag.

  3. 03

    Heat — 10 to 15 minutes

Into the barrel. Sit low if it's your first time, high if you want the löyly. Water on the stones when the room agrees.

  4. 04

    Dip in the Barrow

Down the stone steps, in to the shoulders, slow breath out. Thirty seconds to a minute is plenty.

  5. 05

    Rest on the quay

Wrap up, stand in the air, let the blood come back. This bit is the whole point.

  6. 06

    Repeat, then tea

Two or three rounds in a session. Finish with tea on the wall and watch the river go by.

What to bring

  • Swimwear (worn under your layers saves faffing)
  • A towel — two if you feel the cold
  • Dry robe or big warm layers for after
  • Water bottle
  • Flip-flops or sliders for the quay
  • A hat and socks for the walk back to the car

Give someone the river.

The two founders of Sruth Sauna in dry robes with mugs of tea on the quay at Graiguenamanagh

Our story

It started because we were freezing.

We're two Barrow swimmers. For years we were in the river most mornings before work, then standing on the quay in a wet towel with the hands gone useless, wishing there was somewhere warm to go afterwards.

In 2024 we built one. A wood-fired barrel, put together by hand and rolled onto the old stone quay under Brandon Hill. The plan was a sauna for the two of us and whoever else happened to be in the water that morning.

It didn't stay that way. Word went around the town, then across the bridge into Carlow. Now there are farmers, nurses, students and grandmothers in dry robes at seven in the morning, all of them wrecked and delighted. That's the whole thing — heat, cold water, and a bit of company.

Sruth is the Irish for current, or stream. Seemed right.

Hand-built and wood-fired on the Barrow since 2024.
